All Saints Parish Newsletter 25th September 2014

Thursday 25 September 2014 at 15:51

Dear Friends,

“The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.”

We can recognise the truth in this proverb in Sunday’s first reading (Ezekiel 18: 1-4, 25-32).

The Jewish exiles in Babylon were applying it to themselves; they were paying the price for the sins of their forebears.

Our actions can have consequences on those who come after us. Many suffer as a result of sins of omission or commission on the part of previous generations.  Individuals suffer from parental abuse or neglect. Communities pay the price of corporate folly.  We cannot see refugee children in the Middle East on the television news without our hearts going out to the innocent victims of a seemingly endless cycle of violence and hatred. The cost of our abuse of the planet will be borne by those who come after us.

There is a positive side to this equation too.  Many of us have been blessed by loving parents who cared for us and brought us up properly.  My generation of working class children enjoyed health, education and opportunities far greater than our parents because our country made them possible through the 1944 Education Act and the Welfare State. As Londoners, we no longer have to live with deadly smog because of the Clean Air Act. But new versions of these challenges demand our attention and action.

So why does God, through the prophet Ezekiel, tell the exiles to stop using this proverb?  This is about God’s attitude to sin and punishment. The consequences of sin may pass down through generation, but God does not punish children for the sins of their parents. This would be a radical idea for Ezekiel’s hearers, for in the Law of Moses they heard that he did just that.  Here God states clearly that each generation, each person, is responsible for their own actions.

Ezekiel speaks to a fatalism among exiles prone to sit down by the waters of Babylon and weep. They bemoaned their fate sealed by others and beyond their power to change. This is an attitude we can recognise in ourselves. Christians in our society can feel as if we are exiles in our own land amid a culture either indifferent or hostile. Within our own tradition, we might feel that we have been left behind; side-lined by more dynamic groups. It’s the fault of secularists, our predecessors or fellow-Christians who seem more popular or successful.

Ezekiel sees beneath the people’s complaint of God’s unfairness and refusal to accept responsibility for their own conduct and its consequences. If God is unjust, what is the point of them striving for goodness?  We might say of our own situation, “Well that’s just the way God’s made me. There is nothing I can do about it.”

Ezekiel rejects this evasion and the idea behind it.  Freedom from the penalty of our forebears’ sins also frees us to accept responsibility for our own.  God wants us to choose life rather than the inertia which is death.

That choice involves two things:

  • Repentance, a turning away from sin and all that impoverishes life, “Repent and turn away from all your transgressions, otherwise iniquity will be your ruin” and
  • An active and daily pursuit of “a new heart and a new spirit,” all that brings life both for ourselves, those who share our life, and those who come after us.

Yours in Christ,

Please ring the bell at the Vicarage or Parish Office to gain admittance at the usual times. The main works on infra-structure cabling in the basement take place at the same time as the strip-out. ALL SAINTS SUPPORT FOR HOMELESS PEOPLE – MARYLEBONE PROJECT
A Day Centre, Residential and Transitional accommodation provider, re-settlement project and Educational and Training Unit for women. The Emergency Bed Unit – for which we have for some years provided the funds for one of the 4 beds – provides a safe haven and refuge for women escaping domestic violence, financial crisis, sexual exploitation and mental health issues.

Seasonal Appeals
– Last year we donated £2,790 to this Mission Project, collected through the All Saints Festival and Lent Appeals. The PCC approved support of £3,000 for 2014.

Year Round Support – we also support the Resettlement Project with non-perishable food and toiletries or household necessities like cutlery or bed linen/blankets. Please contribute to this effort, bringing donations to the Parish Office or leaving them in Church in the basket in the Baptistery.

Day-to-day Support – we respond to the needs of homeless people who visit the church, providing luncheon vouchers for the West London Day Centre for rough sleepers who apply to the office and allowing a few individuals, who need a place to shelter or sleep during the day, to rest in the back of the church. We have created an information resource for Church Watchers, giving useful advice to homeless and vulnerable people seeking particular support or services.
In the face of a rising tide of homelessness in London, please help us fund and support people in need through our Mission project.

Want to help someone sleeping rough but don’t know how? Call Streetlink on 0300 500 0914 and they will get a visit from the local Street Team who can put them in contact with the services they may need.
