Lent Appeal

Don’t forget that you can still contribute to the All Saints’ Lent appeal, which this year will contribute towards the costs of the Mental Health Worker who works at the American Church on the Tottenham Court Road. You can give to our Lent appeal here.

Huw Pryce writes about his experience of volunteering at the American Church on  the Tottenham Court Road and the wonderful work they do:

“Last year I was part of a volunteer team providing dinner to those staying in the overnight shelter at the American International Church. This is one part of the ministry for homeless people at the church, with the Soup Kitchen during the day as a separate programme.

The evening was very well organised, with an extensive group of volunteers: those of us providing food; a local running group which stops on their run to set up the beds; and a member of the church congregation who stays overnight. We arrived around 6pm and by 7:30pm were serving food and eating dinner with the 15 or so people who had been referred to the overnight programme from various organisations.

Working with the other churches in the area meant a meal and a warm bed each night during the colder months, as well as a paid social worker who supports the homeless guests in accessing additional support. The success rate was impressive, with most people being found some form of support within four or five weeks.

While All Saints’ supports the separate soup kitchen, I am sure this is run in a similarly effective and impressive way and our funding of a mental health worker makes the provision more effective at helping people out of a cycle of rough sleeping.

I strongly commend supporting our Lent appeal this year and hope that in future years we might look at having an All Saints’ group volunteer to serve dinner for the night shelter.”
