Dear friends,
I am pleased to announce a fascinating parish trip in the New Year on Tuesday 28th January 2025 at 6.30 pm to the British Library to see a new exhibition called, “Medieval Women: in their own words.” The exhibition seeks to help us discover more about “the rich and complex lives of women in the Middle Ages, with over 140 extraordinary items that reveal their artistry, resourcefulness, courage and struggles.”
The lives of many of the figures which the exhibition explores reveal some of the most significant theological debates of the Medieval period and important developments in spirituality, worship, literature, music, and the religious life. Books, precious objects, historical documents, and rare texts reveal the daily experience of women as they negotiate the complexities of life, faith, influence, power and gender roles in the Medieval world.
The British Library website describes the exhibition thus: “From the courage of Joan of Arc at her trial for heresy, and the visionary experiences of Julian of Norwich, to the artistry of the London silkwoman Alice Claver, the work of female medical practitioners, and the struggles of female rulers like Queen Melisende of Jerusalem, this exhibition explores the challenges, achievements and daily lives of women in Europe from 1100 to 1500.”
We are very fortunate indeed that the exhibition’s lead curator, Julian Harrison, has agreed to speak with us before we enter the exhibition to introduce its key themes to us.
Our visit to “Medieval Women” will then be followed by supper together at Pizza Express on the Euston Road, opposite the Library. The exhibition costs £15 and the two course dinner at Pizza Express is £30. You can book your tickets and places for the dinner via Eventbrite here.
I am particularly pleased that a week after our visit to the exhibition, there will be the opportunity to discuss, analyse and debate what we saw further through one of our Zoom Theology seminars on Tuesday 4th February at 7.00 pm.
Our seminar will be led by two significant academics in the realm of Medieval history and theology: we’ll be joined by Dr Mark Philpott, a medievalist and historiographer at Keble College, Oxford; and Dr Charlotte Gauthier, a historian of Church and State in the Medieval and Early Modern period (who also spoke this week at our in person formation session on the C14th Poem “Pearl”). They will help us reflect on the exhibition, and understand more about how theology, religious life, and Christian faith affected role of women in Medieval Europe.
These two evenings will be fascinating opportunities for study, discussion and discovery, as we ponder a realm of theology and history which has often been under-explored, and which reveals much to us about how the Christian faith has formed, shaped and defined the lives of so many in generations past.

All Saints’ Festival Parish lunch
We are appealing for food for the parish lunch which will take place after the Festival Sunday High Mass on Sunday 3rd November. Please be in touch with Kate Hodgetts if you are able to bring something. We are specifically asking for “finger food” – i.e. buffet food that can be eaten without a knife and fork (i.e. canapés, sandwiches, sausage rolls, small quiches, mini pork pies, cakes etc) so as to keep washing up to a minimum.
We are grateful to Dr Charlotte Gauthier for speaking to our in person formation group about the C14th poem, “Pearl” on Wednesday night.
Preacher this Sunday
We welcome as our preacher at the High Mass this Sunday Fr Russ Snapp. He is Associate Priest at Holy Trinity with St. Augustine, Upper Tooting, but also frequently worships with us here at All Saints’. Before retiring to England, Fr Russ was Sub-Dean of Holy Trinity Cathedral, Little Rock Arkansas. He is a good friend of our parish and we look forward to hearing his words.
Young Adults Pub Quiz
Our Young Adults group will join the pub quiz which takes places on Tuesday 29th October at 7pm at The King’s Arms, Great Titchfield Street, W1W 7QL. Be in touch with Fr Alan if you’d like to join us for this All Saintstide get-together.
It was a delight to welcome guests and friends of Berlin to Evensong last Sunday and to throw a drinks party in their honour. They were in London as part of the ecumenical partnership which exists between our diocese and the Church of Berlin-Brandenburg.
Parish walking Group
Our next parish rambling day will take place on Saturday 16th November. Weather permitting, we’ll take a circular route from Guildford towards the Surrey Hills, taking in Albury, Shere and Blackheath. We’ll aim for the 09.35 train from Waterloo. All welcome. More details to follow.
German guests from Berlin mingle with All Saints’ parishioners and the Archdeacon of London at last Sunday’s party in honour of our visitors from Berlin.
Epistle of James with the Revd Dr Andrew Adam
Our next autumn in person formation session takes place on Wednesday, 30th October at 7pm. Our speaker is a tutor in New Testament and Greek at the University of Oxford, who also ministers at St Helen’s Parish Church in Abingdon. He will lead us in an introduction to the Epistle of James, a particular area of interest in his studies and writing.
Holy Hour takes place from at 5.30 pm for those who wish to join us, and the evening begins with a light supper after the 6.30 pm Mass

It was a particularly honour to have with us Ulrike Trautwein last Sunday, leading the group of visitors from Berlin. She is the “Generalsuperintendentin” for the city of Berlin. This is similar to the role of an Area Bishop in the Church of England.
Zoom Theology
Our next Zoom seminar will take place on Saturday 9th November at 7.00 pm and will focus on the theology of Soren Kierkegaard.
We’ll be joined from America by Fr Jeffrey Hanson who will introduce us to aspects of this compelling Danish philosopher’s thought. Fr Hanson is an academic philosopher and has researched and published widely on Kierkegaard.
We are pleased that this seminar is being advertised in both our parish and also in the parish of St Mary the Virgin Times Square. We are hoping it will be attended by parishioners of both churches as a shared teaching event.

CD launch concert
A concert to celebrate the launch of our Associate Director of Music’s CD entitled “Heroic Spirit” will take place on Saturday 23rd November at 3.00 pm.
Recorded earlier this year at Selby Abbey the CD contains music from the French Romantic tradition from Franck and Widor to Dupré and the late Rachel Laurin.
The concert gives a taster of what you can expect on the CD and includes a reception afterwards with opportunity to purchase your own copy. The concert is free to attend but there will be a retiring collection towards supporting the music at All Saints.

Advent Silent Retreat
A silent pre-Christmas retreat will take place at the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham from Friday 6th – Sunday 8th December 2024. The weekend involves arriving on Friday afternoon, and then keeping silence from Friday evening until Sunday morning. The cost of this pilgrimage is £250. This covers the cost of accommodation, meals and travel from Kings Lynn. Pilgrims simply have to pay for their train ticket to Kings Lynn.
