I am pleased to announce a new parish outing which will take place on Saturday 11th May to Westminster Abbey to see the new interactive exhibition on the history of Notre Dame Cathedral, Paris. The visit will also give us access to Westminster Abbey itself, and I am very grateful that the Abbey’s Librarian, Dr Tony Trowles, has agreed to give us a tour of their historic Library. Our day trip will begin with the exhibition at 1.30 pm and will finish with tea and Evensong.

Westminister Abbey is hosting a remarkable new exhibition from Paris about Notre Dame in the Chapter House of the Abbey. It will be in London only until the beginning of June. It seeks to recount the history of Paris’s Cathedral by using the latest museum and exhibition technology to bring the Notre Dame’s vivid and fascinating past to life.

The Abbey says the following about the project: “This exhibition is an immersive and interactive journey through Notre Dame’s past including the lavish wedding of King Henri IV, the glittering coronation of Napoleon Bonaparte, and the 19th century construction of Notre-Dame’s iconic spire of Viollet-le-Duc, which was tragically destroyed by the fire. The skill, artistry and vision over the ages of its architects, craftsmen and builders, and the 21st century experts who are bringing it back to its former glory are brought to life in the show.”

This parish trip is completely free of charge, but our group is limited to 15 people. To book your place, please email our parish office (office @asms.uk).

I can’t wait to learn more about the medieval origins of one of France’s finest and most noble cathedrals, along with experiencing the present day life of one of our capital’s most beloved churches and learning more about its rich history too.

Thanks

I would like to express a word of profound thanks to all who contributed in any way to the celebration of the Paschal Triduum this year. It has been a wonderful week in which, through our participation in the liturgy of the Church, we have entered afresh into the mystery of Christ’s death and resurrection.

The liturgies themselves have been beautiful. We all owe a huge debt of thanks to our Director of Music, Associate Director of Music, Choir, organ scholar, and servers. The quality of music has been outstanding. The organisation of our sacristies, liturgical rehearsals, and prayerful serving of the liturgy by our serving team has been second to none.

Immense amounts of work have gone into preparing, cleaning and decorating our church, and I want to pay particular tribute to those who arranged the magnificent flowers which are adorning it at the moment, and which also formed our garden of repose.

I would like to say a particular word of thanks to all those who contributed in any way to our live streaming and social media presence over Holy Week, especially Huw Pryce, Richard Everton and Mark Fleming. It has been such a joy to see so many join us online, and especially to see liturgies involving outside broadcasting such as the Palm Sunday live streamed so professionally. Mark Fleming has been a huge help in producing wonderful photographs of all our liturgies. Our live online participation is up by 17% on last year and I am convinced it is the result of all this hard work.

It has been a week of splendid parties, times of fellowship together in our courtyard, and merry evenings in our parish bar as we have celebrated the Resurrection together, and welcomed many visitors and friends. We are especially grateful to those who organise welcome and refreshments, and especially to Kate Hodgetts and Chris Self for all they do to coordinate this crucial part of our parish’s life.

I am so glad that Fr David Houlding was able to be with us as our Holy Week preacher. I found his preaching fascinating and moving. Many parishioners have already told me how much they appreciated his presence with us. We say a huge thank you to him for being with us and for all the time and effort he put into homiletic preparation. I am pleased to be able to announce that our Holy Week preacher next year will be Fr Jeremy Haselock. He is a good friend of our parish, a published expert on the liturgical tradition undergirding Holy Week, and an excellent preacher. We look forward to having him with us next year.

SOM May Devotion

The Society of Mary May Devotion will take place at S. Silas’, Kentish Town, on Saturday 4th May at 12 noon. The principal celebrant at the Mass will be the Bishop of Fulham, and the preacher at the afternoon devotion will be the Bishop of Oswestry.

Zoom Theology

Our next Zoom Theology Seminar will take place on Tuesday, May 14th, 2024. It will be entitled, “The Scapegoat: James Alison, René Girard and Scapegoating.”

Thomas Miles will lead us in a study of Fr James Alison, a Catholic priest and theologian influenced by the ideas of René Girard (1923-2015). Details will follow nearer the time, but we’ll be thinking about how Jesus’ death calls into judgement the human tendency to create social cohesion through scapegoating, and how, conversely, the resurrection invites Christians to courageously seek truth in unity.

Confirmation 2024

Please note that Bishop Jonathan will be with us for the Feast of Pentecost on  Sunday 19th May to baptize and confirm. There will be a parish lunch after the High Mass to celebrate with those who have been confirmed and received into the Church of England. Do put this occasion in your diaries and pray for those preparing to receive the sacraments of initiation.
