Weekly Email – Ss. Peter and Paul
Documents
Dear friends,
The next week or two see a number of celebrations, visits, and special services which I would like to draw your attention to.
This Sunday we celebrate the feast of Saints Peter and Paul. The music at the High Mass will include Darke in F as the Mass setting, and O Quam Gloriosum by Victoria as the Offertory Anthem. The Voluntary will be Allegro Moderato e Serioso from Mendelssohn’s Sonata 1 in F minor.
On Sunday evening, Evensong will be celebrated solemnly with “three copes.” The canticles will be Watson’s setting in E, and the Anthem will be Meditabor by Rheinberger. The voluntary will be Placare Christe Servulis by Dupré. Do join us for this wonderful feast day.
On Monday 30th June, the Friends of St George’s Anglican Church, Paris, will be visiting us and having their annual Sung Mass at 6.30 pm. It is always lovely to see friends from Paris and those with connections to St George’s who now live in London visiting All Saints’. Please note that this Sung Mass replaces our usual 6.30 pm Low Mass.
On Saturday 5th June, Fr Reg Bushau will be celebrating his 50th anniversary of ordination with a High Mass at All Saints’ at 3.00 pm. Fr Reg is a good friend of our parish and frequently helps with cover of Low Masses during the week. All parishioners of All Saints’ are invited to join him for this celebration which will be followed by drinks in our courtyard.
Please also note that the Bishop of Fulham’s ordinations take place this weekend. He extends a special invitation to all parishioners from his parishes to attend. The ordinations to the diaconate take place at 11.00 am today (Saturday 28th June) and the ordinations to the priesthood are at 5.00 pm on Sunday 29th June. These are both at St Andrew’s, Holborn.
I am also pleased to announce that a visiting guest preacher will be with us next Sunday, 6th July. Fr Matthew Olver is a priest of the Episcopal Church in America and is the Executive Director of Living Church. He happens to be in England on a research trip and so has agreed to preach for us next Sunday. He visited us last year when he worked on the staff at Nashotah House and was an excellent preacher. We look forward to hearing his words next Sunday.
In addition to all these other notices and pieces of news, may I point out to you that time is running out to book a place on our Walsingham weekend pilgrimage which takes places 25th-27th July. We still have 8 places left, so be in touch if you would like to join us. This is the last week you can book.
The cost of the pilgrimage is £190, including full board plus mini-coach from Kings Lynn. Pilgrims need to book their own train ticket to Kings Lynn. There is also an option for pilgrims who wish to stay on until the Monday and return on 28th July – this costs £280. You can book a place on the pilgrimage via this Eventbrite link. Our parish office will then be in touch in a couple of weeks to settle the balance.
I can’t recommend pilgrimage too highly as a way of re-charging the spiritual batteries and taking time out from the hustle and bustle of life to be renewed in the presence of God at Our Lady’s Shrine.
Yours,
Fr Peter

Film night
There will be a film night with refreshments for our young adults at Fr Alan’s flat on 23 July at 7 pm. Please be in touch with Fr Alan if you wish to attend.
August Bible Study
Encouraged by the size and consistency of numbers at the Bible studies that took place after Holy Hour and the evening Mass on Wednesdays in August last year, there will be another series of Bible studies this year, centred on St Luke’s Gospel. Sessions will take place on 13, 20 and 27 August. There will be a rough limit of 25 per session and sign-up (free, of course) will be by Eventbrite, so that we fit comfortably into the Parish Room. There will be tea and coffee available. You can sign up for all the sessions, or just those you are able to make, here.
Our preacher for Corpus Christi was Fr Grant Naylor. You can hear his sermon again here.
Sick List
Our parish list of the sick, who are prayed for every day at the 12 noon Mass has been renewed. When this happens, all names are removed, and if you would like a loved one or friend to be included in the new list, you should email the parish office (office@asms.uk). A name will normally be left on the sick list for three weeks and will then be removed unless you specifically renew it by contacting the parish office.

Parish Walks
Our next parish walk will be a nine mile walk from Amberley to Arundel on Saturday July 12th. We’ll get the 10.05 train from Victoria Station. Amberley is the stop before Arundel, so a return ticket will work. We will aim for the 17.14 train back at the latest, and so will be back in London before 7pm. Please email Fr Alan to sign up or for more details.

Next Zoom Theology
Our next online Zoom Theology seminar will take place on Tuesday 8th July at 7.00 pm. It will focus on a recently published book by biblical scholar Candida Moss entitled, “God’s Ghostwriters: Enslaved Christians and the Making of the Bible.”
This seminar, led by Fr Peter, will seek to delve deeper into the question of who wrote the New Testament.
We are used to thinking of the great names of the apostolic band as the authors of the gospels and epistles, but who actually put pen to paper, and in what sense can we say they “wrote” those texts?
This ground-breaking new work by Candida Moss explores the contribution of a range of enslaved secretaries, amanuenses and writers. It seeks to reveal the forgotten voices, and marginalised contributors without whose work the New Testament corpus would not exist.
It will be important for all participants to have read Candida Moss’s book in preparation for the seminar.
