EASTER 6
As we are reminded on Sunday, and in next week’s feast of the Ascension, Jesus, though risen from the dead, must leave his friends; yet from now on God is present in every detail of our lives. The gift of the Spirit which we celebrate the following week at Pentecost, is offered freely to us in Baptism and Confirmation and nourished in the Eucharist. It is activated on our part by love: for Jesus, for God, for one another. ‘God is love, and those who love live in God and God lives in them’ as we read in 1 John 4. Sunday’s Gospel, from John’s report of the final discourse of Jesus, has Jesus reminding us that ‘If you love me, you will keep my commandments.’ During the same meal, John tells us that Jesus says, ‘love one another as I have loved you’, ‘by this shall people know that you are my disciples, if you love one another’.
That reminds us that we are a church together, not Christians on our own. And the Eucharist is the centre of that communal Christian life. This is timely for various of us who are looking forward to or recalling ordination to the priesthood, for whom the Eucharist is our raison d’etre.
This Sunday, 21st May, at 3pm the Bishop of Gambia will ordain our friend Philip Sanneh to the priesthood in All Saints. I am very sorry that, because I am leading the parish retreat this year, I will be unable to join in that liturgy; I hope many of you, will be there for this joyful occasion. I have been involved in the preparations for the ordination and look forward to hearing about it when I return. But this is just the beginning of what I am calling the Summer of Priesthood at ASMS. Fr Alan will be celebrating his 40 years in priestly orders with a High Mass on the evening of Friday 9th June with Fr Ian Paton, his successor as Rector of Old St Paul’s in Edinburgh, as preacher. And, at the end of June I will celebrate my Silver Jubilee of priesthood. On Friday 30th June (8pm) I have engaged my favourite traditional jazz band, Digby Fairweather and his Half Dozen, to play a concert in All Saints (I suspect this may be a first, not only for Digby but for the musical genre in our building). I have asked them to play for me, because this is the music I love best and because I believe that improvising on traditional themes is also an excellent metaphor for priestly life. Though they are playing for me, you are all welcome. A donation to the ASMS Foundation will be invited but not required. There will also be refreshments. On the following Sunday, 2nd July, the preacher at High Mass will be my friend and contemporary Fr Robin Ward, now Principal of St Stephen’s House, from which we both joyfully escaped into the diaconate 26 years ago. The soundtrack will be by Vierne and Verdi and the refreshments by the Veuve Clicquot and some of her siblings.
As some of you know, I have little family and very few of those few are in this country; I suspect Fr Philip is in a similar position, at least here in London. But, as Jesus repeatedly teaches, we are all brothers and sisters together with him in the Christian Community as children of one heavenly Father. You are my family, and Fr Philip’s family, and, in Christ, you augment the vast Moses clan as well. These anniversaries can seem ego-centric. I hope you will join me in seeing them instead as familial community events which we all celebrate together.

All welcome – please come and support Philip and his family on this very special occasion, which Churchwarden John Forde advises is the first ordination at All Saints for 94 years. Back then, on St James’ Day, Wednesday, 25 July 1923, the Bishop of Nassau, by permission of the Bishop of the diocese, held an Ordination at All Saints.

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK – Until Saturday 20 May 2017
This year is the 60th Anniversary of the founding of Christian Aid by British churches, supporting refugees, who had lost their homes and possessions in the Second World War. Twelve years later, they launched Christian Aid Week to help fund this ongoing work. Tens of millions of people worldwide are in the terrible position of fleeing, often with small children, conflict and disaster, making dangerous journeys in search of safety. Compassion has no borders. So Christian Aid invites you to help relieve the suffering of refugees and build a world where everyone has a safe place to call home. Please take a Fundraising envelope from those on the table in Church and give what you can.

2017 LENT APPEAL FINAL TOTAL – we are pleased to report that this achieved a final collection (including applicable Gift Aid) of £6,490. Thank you very much for the generosity of the 70 individual donors and those who gave cash to the collection plate on Good Friday. This will allow us to send £1,622.50 to each of our four nominated charities:-
1. THE BISHOP OF LONDON’S LENT APPEAL: fundraising for Sowing Seeds for Tomorrow – education & training projects with ALMA, the Diocesan Partnership with Angola and Mozambique
2. Our Parish Mission Projects: USPG – support and training for those experiencing HIV and Aids-related stigma in Zimbabwe.
3. THE MARYLEBONE PROJECT – the Church Army’s emergency refuge/rehoming service for homeless women in London NW1.
4. THE SOUP KITCHEN – tackling food poverty with the American International Church on Tottenham Court Road, feeding up to 70 vulnerable people a day.

“THY KINGDOM COME” – 26 May to Pentecost, 3 June We are invited to join in Thy Kingdom Come, a global wave of prayer, starting at Ascension. The nine days between Ascension and Pentecost have traditionally been devoted to prayer for the Holy Spirit, and in recent years the Archbishops of Canterbury and York have invited church communities and individuals, in this country and beyond, to join in this time of prayer. At All Saints throughout this period, the first Mass of the day will be offered with this intention. The Methodist ‘Forward Movement’ aimed to reduce the distance between the Christian gospel and the poor working classes. In consequence, from the 1880s it opened many Wesleyan Missions as centres for reaching thousands of people. It was high risk, sacrificial gospel outreach marrying together Wesley’s emphasis on both personal and social holiness. This lecture explores how the principles of the Forward Movement might find form and tone today.

T S Eliot was baptized at Finstock, Oxfordshire. At the time and from 1920 – 1932 he lived successively at flats 9, 98, 177 and 68 Clarence Gate Gardens. St Cyprian’s was his parish church where he became a daily worshipper and where Viv, his first wife continued to worship after the marriage ended.

** MISSION NEWS**
Men’s clothing especially is needed by the Jesus Centre in Margaret Street and also by the Soup Kitchen at the American International Church, both of whom provide a daily range of services to homeless people. If you have women’s or men’s clothes to give away, please bring to Church and leave at the Parish Office so we can continue to help support our neighbours’ efforts. The Church Army is now also collecting women’s clothes for their Homeless Hostel so all donations can be found a good new home!
The Soup Kitchen specifically calls for: men’s trousers (sizes 32-36) and men’s sturdy/athletic shoes (sizes 9-12 especially) and say ‘we are also beginning to need men’s outerwear of all varieties and we always need rucksacks and duffle-bags to help our guests carry their belongings!’
