Study Day and Pilgrimage: Ravenna – the art of theology

Friday 29th October 2021, 10am-4pm

I am very pleased to be able to announce an exciting theological study day which will take place at All Saints this Autumn on Friday 29th October. It will be focussed on the theological, historical and artistic treasures of the city of Ravenna. It is timed for the Friday before the All Saints Festival, and I hope it will add an extra dimension to the keeping of our patronal feast. My aspiration is that this could become a regular event each autumn.

I am very pleased indeed that Professor Judith Herrin has agreed to come to be our key note speaker. She has in the past year published an excellent history of Ravenna which has garnered outstanding reviews and prizes. She will take a historical view of the day’s subject in her address to us. We will also be welcoming Fr Anders Bergquist, Vicar of St John’s Wood, who will explore some of the Christological debates which characterised so much of the city’s history. I also will be offering a lecture based on recent research I have undertaken (and which will form part of a book to be published next year) into the way in which biblical narratives were received and interpreted in some of the city’s famous mosaics.

Ravenna is a place of such extraordinary cultural and theological riches that I am hoping this study day will act as a spring board for a parish pilgrimage to Ravenna next spring or summer (i.e. 2022). Details are a little hazy at the moment, but I will sort out dates and costings over the coming weeks and aim to have a pilgrimage package to offer people by the end of the summer. I hope this study day will peak your interest in visiting one of Europe’s most fascinating cities.

I hope that over the coming months All Saints can re-energise its vocation to be a place of excellent teaching and intellectual engagement with the Christian faith. I urge you to put this study day in your diaries if you are able to attend, and I look forward to hearing what our visiting speakers have to say.

REMINDER: Parish visit to “Thomas Becket: murder and the making of a saint” at the British Museum

Friday 2nd July 6.00 pm – followed by dinner

A quick reminder to book a place on our parish visit to the British Museum for its exhibition on Thomas Becket. Tickets have gone fast over the past week, but some still remain, so don’t delay in reserving yourself one if you wish to come.

We will meet at the British Museum at 6.00 pm on Friday 2nd July 2020. The exhibition will be followed by the opportunity to have dinner together at Le Beaujolais restaurant in Litchfield Street. We have bought 20 tickets for the exhibition and they will be apportioned on a strictly ‘first come, first served’ basis. The exhibition tickets cost £17.50. A three course dinner at Le Beaujolais will be £36 (without wine – each person will be able to pay for their own wine on the night), so if you wish to stay on for dinner, the total is £53.50.

Melanie Toogood RIP

Fr Peter McGeary has been in touch to let those who remember her know that the Rev’d Melanie Toogood’s Funeral Mass will be at St James Church Prebend St, London N1 8PH on Thursday 17 June at 1130. It is hoped this service will be live-streamed.
