In 1919 the people of Plymouth voted in their new member of parliament. The new MP was born in the United States, but this was not the reason why the majority of the British parliament was antagonistic towards its new member. The new MP was a woman, Nancy Astor, the first woman to gain a seat in the House of Commons. Since Lady Astor believed in making her presence felt in the House of Commons, she regularly interrupted other speakers – particularly on the rights of women. When rebuked for her constant interventions, she protested that she had been listening for hours before interrupting. A colleague whispered to her: “Yes, Nancy, we’ve all heard you listening.”
In today’s Gospel we heard a pagan woman listening to Jesus and we saw how she made her presence felt. She comes across as one of the most attractive characters in the pages of the Gospel: a mother who is tormented by the torment of her daughter, a woman who takes to the streets to make her plea to Jesus, who refuses to take his silence for the last word, who organises a one-woman protest in the path of these runaway men. She is the only person in the Gospels who has the wit to outwit Jesus. And in the end, she gets what she wants.
At first, the Christian community at Jerusalem had no mission to the Gentiles. Nobody went to the “dogs”, as they were called. But Paul comes on the scene as the apostle who rejoices in the fact that his vocation is to go to the dogs. He himself was a strict Pharisee, and he too had to be converted from his attitude to non-Jews. He leads by his example when he spearheads the early Church’s mission to the Gentiles. Paul sets the example for the whole Christian Church. If we believe that Christ died for everyone, then no one should be excluded from the all-embracing reach of God’s love.
And that is why the Canaanite woman in the Gospel is so important for all of us. She is the teacher of the servants of God. Through her demand for attention and dignity, the voice of God questions us all.

We should like to thank everyone who helped in advance preparations or on the day in any way to make it such a great success! We can’t make such a significant public act of witness to our faith happen on shopper-thronging Oxford Street without lots of willing volunteers – huge thanks!
Sunday 3 September – Volunteers to help prepare & serve coffee and hot snacks needed please. One/two people are needed before Mass from 10.30am to set out cups, fill the hot water urn; to serve refreshments after Mass and clear up. Friday 8 September, 7.30pm – St Mary’s, Cable Street Patronal Festival 2017 – Solemn Mass on the Feast of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Preacher: the Dean of Westminster. Mass will be followed by a party in the church hall. All welcome.

CTiW Reformation 500 event, St Martin-in-the-Fields – Bread for the World. St Martin-in-the-Fields is hosting a Churches Together in Westminster Reformation 500 event, with St Anne’s Lutheran Church London and Revd Eliza Zikmane, focusing on Luther’s legacy to Christian Education through the Small Catechism, Bread for the World is a great way to find focus during a busy week. With music led by the Choral Scholars of St Martin’s.

ALL SAINTS MISSION PROJECTS
Our year-round fundraising efforts go to support three charities:
The Church Army hostels and programmes in Marylebone empowering homeless women into independent living.
The USPG-led UMOJA, HIV Project in Zimbabwe, enabling people living with HIV and Aids to have positive lives, and
The Soup Kitchen (American International Church, Tottenham Court Road) feeding up to 80 vulnerable people daily in central London.
Men’s clothing especially is needed by the Jesus Centre in Margaret Street and also by the Soup Kitchen at the American International Church, both of whom provide a daily range of services to homeless people. If you have women’s or men’s clothes to give away, please bring to Church and leave at the Parish Office so we can continue to help support our neighbours’ efforts. The Church Army is now also collecting women’s clothes for their Homeless Hostel so all donations can be found a good new home!
The Soup Kitchen specifically calls for: men’s trousers (sizes 32-36) and men’s sturdy/athletic shoes (sizes 9-12 especially) and say ‘we also need men’s outerwear of all varieties and rucksacks and duffle-bags to help our guests carry their belongings!’
The Soup Kitchen team (only part-time cover) asks: ‘Please drop me a line if you are planning to drop things off here.
