Our Ascension preacher, Fr John Gibaut, is the Anglican Communion Director of Unity, Faith and Order (UFO, as he amusingly pointed out), which really means Christian Unity. He reminded us last night that the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Thy Kingdom Come initiative launches today, aiming to spark a wave of unity across churches for 10 days of prayer between the Christian festivals of Ascension and Pentecost.
This is an ecumenical and global initiative in the form of what we would call a novena. A novena is nine days of prayer that usually encourages us to pray for a particular intention as we prepare for a feast day. Intercessory prayer takes us beyond ourselves as we ask our loving Father to bless someone else.
‘We can say that God’s heart is touched by our intercession, yet in reality he is always there first. What our intercession achieves is that his power, his love and his faithfulness are shown ever more clearly in the midst of the people.’ (Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium 283)
In the 19th Century Blessed Elena Guerra, the founder of the Sisters of the Holy Spirit, felt it was important that the Church be renewed to the passion of the first Christians at Pentecost and petitioned Pope Leo XXIII in the following manner:
‘Pentecost is not over. In fact it is continuously going on in every time and in every place because the Holy Spirit desired to give Himself to all men and all who want Him can always receive Him, so we do not envy the apostles and the first believers; we only have to dispose ourselves like them to receive Him well, and He will come to us as He did to them.’
As a result of her promptings the Pope issued several important documents about the Holy Spirit. He also asked the Church to celebrate a novena (nine days of prayer) every year between the Ascension and Pentecost. This ecumenical initiative originates in the teaching and actions of a Pope we might consider the least ecumenical pontiff of recent history – he who was persuaded (by English Roman Catholics) to declare Anglican orders ‘absolutely null and utterly void’. Just recently, however, we have heard a senior Vatican theologian suggesting (with the Anglican Communion in view) that orders may be differently valid in different contexts. And it is a symptom of the new landscape of ecumenism that a call to prayer which emerged from ultramontane 19th century Roman Catholicism is today promoted by our Archbishop together with Christian leaders from all the churches.
We are all therefore invited to pray the Pentecost Novena for this fresh outpouring of the Holy Spirit, especially since it is through the Holy Spirit that a person can encounter Jesus Christ and experience the love of God our Father. Whilst this is something that each of us needs, the novena challenges us to go beyond our own needs by asking for this blessing for others.

DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE ANGLICAN CENTRE IN ROME SUNDAY 28 MAY
We have been especially asked to pray for the Anglican Centre this Sunday. Unity was our Lord’s own prayer and we must pray that our sad divisions soon may cease. The work that the Anglican Centre does, not just with the Roman Church, but with churches of other denominations, in praying for this unity, is a vital part of their existence.
Pray for the recently departed: All those who died in the Manchester terrorist attack on 22 May 2017, Russell Ingham (Priest) whose Funeral took place on 22 May, Jeff Ezell whose Funeral takes place on 1 June, Teyah, James Roach, Sue Hawes, Roger Goff and Stephen Goff.

ALL SAINTS’ PILGRIMAGE TO ITALY, 10- 18 MAY 2018
Following on the success of the Parish Pilgrimage to the Isle of Iona a couple of years ago, Fr Gerald Beauchamp and Fr Michael Bowie are planning a pilgrimage to Italy next year. The itinerary includes San Giovanni Rotondo, Loreto, Ravenna & Assisi. Cost £1,400 (approx). The Methodist ‘Forward Movement’ aimed to reduce the distance between the Christian gospel and the poor working classes. In consequence, from the 1880s it opened many Wesleyan Missions as centres for reaching thousands of people. It was high risk, sacrificial gospel outreach marrying together Wesley’s emphasis on both personal and social holiness. This lecture explores how the principles of the Forward Movement might find form and tone today.

T S Eliot was baptized at Finstock, Oxfordshire. At the time and from 1920 – 1932 he lived successively at flats 9, 98, 177 and 68 Clarence Gate Gardens. St Cyprian’s was his parish church where he became a daily worshipper and where Viv, his first wife continued to worship after the marriage ended.

** MISSION NEWS**
Men’s clothing especially is needed by the Jesus Centre in Margaret Street and also by the Soup Kitchen at the American International Church, both of whom provide a daily range of services to homeless people. If you have women’s or men’s clothes to give away, please bring to Church and leave at the Parish Office so we can continue to help support our neighbours’ efforts. The Church Army is now also collecting women’s clothes for their Homeless Hostel so all donations can be found a good new home!
The Soup Kitchen specifically calls for: men’s trousers (sizes 32-36) and men’s sturdy/athletic shoes (sizes 9-12 especially) and say ‘we are also beginning to need men’s outerwear of all varieties and we always need rucksacks and duffle-bags to help our guests carry their belongings!’
