Sunday’s gospel is about counting the cost and taking up one’s cross as a follower of Christ.
Today, Friday 2nd September, is marked by a very significant commemoration in Australia and the South Pacific, the Martyrs of Papua New Guinea. During WWII New Guinea and Papua, then both administered separately by Australia were occupied by the Japanese army; 333 Christians of all denominations died for their faith. Among them were a number of Anglican priests, evangelists, nurses and teachers. One, Fr Bernard Moore, was shot while saying Mass on the island of New Britain. During these events the Anglican Bishop, Philip Strong, an Englishman who was a frequent visitor to Christ Church St Laurence in Sydney and later Archbishop of Brisbane, made a notable statement of solidarity with his young church, which was later seen as a turning point in local Christianity:
“My brothers and sisters, fellow-workers in Christ, whatever others may do we cannot leave. We shall not leave. We shall stay by our trust. We shall stand by our vocation. We do not know what it may mean to us. Many already think us fools and mad. What does that matter! If we are fools, we are fools for Christ’s sake.
I cannot foretell the future. I cannot guarantee all will be well — that we shall all come through unscathed.
“One thing only I can guarantee is that if we do not forsake Christ present here in His Body in Papua, the Church, He will not forsake us. He will uphold us; He will sustain us; He will strengthen us and He will guide and keep us through the days that lie ahead.
“If we left all, it would take years for the Church to recover from our betrayal of trust. If we remain — and even if the worst came to the worst and we all were to perish in remaining — the Church would not perish, for there would have been no breach of trust within its walls, but its foundation and structure would have received added strength for the future building by our faithfulness unto death.”
….. “We have made our resolution to stay. Let us not shrink from it. Let us not go back on it. Let us trust and not be afraid.”
Strong’s own courage and his support of those who did suffer martyrdom gave to the subsequently united nation of Papua New Guinea a credible, local and contemporary witness to the Christian faith. As his statement suggests, counting the cost is not just about us, but about all those with whom we are connected by baptism. As Paul would say, if one part of the body feels something the whole Body is affected. The fruits of his and others’ steadfast faith were considerable.
Bishop Strong’s support of and solidarity with those who were martyred was as significant to the subsequent growth of the Church in PNG as the martyrdoms we celebrate today. You and I are unlikely, Deo gratias, to be faced with the sort of cost-counting that was forced upon Bishop Strong and his colleagues. But our steadfastness in faith, our support of our brothers and sisters, and the daily conduct of our lives as people known to be Christians, are all equally important in building the kingdom, in which our common relatedness is all.

NEW STOCKS OF CHRISTMAS CARDS FOR ALL SAINTS
We now have a large number of photographs taken of the Church and special services over the last couple of years. We have been working with the expertise of congregation member Judith Mather of the National Gallery to select the best images and arrange for high quality/reasonable cost reproduction. We hope to have the new card designs available in September. If you know that you might want to use these, subject to final image/price, perhaps you would let Dee Prior in the Parish Office (Tel: 020 7 636 1788 or e-mail: astsmgtst@aol.com) know of your interest to help us to decide on the number we might want to print.
VICAR’S FUNDRAISING PILGRIMAGE – SPONSORSHIP MONIES RECEIVED NOW UP TO £14,640 – Please send in any last cheques so we can finalise the collection of Gift Aid in September. Fr. Alan completed 566.5 km of his fundraising walking pilgrimage before knee injury called a halt to his heroic endeavours. If you have/would like to sponsor him and help achieve his target of £20k for the Diocese of London’s projects for persecuted Christians in Iraq and Syria, please send cheques to: PAROCHIAL CHURCH ALL SAINTS, Parish Office, All Saints, 7 Margaret Street, London W1W 8JG. We will process gift aid and forward funds to the Bishop of London’s Lent Appeal 2016. PILGRIMAGE TO ITALY IN 2018 – Fr Gerald Beauchamp and Fr Michael Bowie are planning a pilgrimage to Italy in May 2018. Ideas so far include Assisi and Loreto. There will be a meeting on Tuesday 18 October, 7.15pm in the All Saints Margaret Street Parish Room (off the courtyard) to look at possibilities. All welcome. If you would like to come in 2018 but are unable to attend the meeting please register your interest with Fr Gerald (gerald.beauch@btconnect.com). Thank you.
** MISSION NEWS** In addition to items of clothing for women, accepted as always by our regular Mission Project – the Marylebone Project – we can now take men’s clothing which is badly needed by the Jesus Centre in Margaret Street, who provide a daily range of services to homeless people. As you prepare for the winter season, if you have men’s or women’s clothes to give away, please bring to Church and leave at the Parish Office so we can continue to help homeless women and also support our neighbour’s efforts predominantly with homeless men.
CELL OF OUR LADY OF WALSINGHAM – at All Saints you will find a new leaflet with details of 2016/17 events. You need not be a member of the Cell to join in these events. They are organised by the Cell members for all to join in as they wish.

Churches Together in Westminster have asked us to publicise a wonderful storytelling event being held to celebrate the European Days of Jewish Culture and Heritage. The organisers say: “There will be two captivating story tellers coming to delve into the shared Jewish and Muslim stories of the women surrounding Moshe/Moses/Musa, in their show ‘Midwives of Freedom’. This is a fantastic performance and it is truly a delight to have Adele Moss and Jumana Moon joining us. As well as the storytelling we will also be providing an exquisite afternoon tea and a guided tour of West London Synagogue.”

ST MARY’S BOURNE STREET TALKS
One of London’s principal Anglo-Catholic churches, closely connected with the intellectual thought of the Catholic tradition in the Church of England, will be holding a number of lectures in memory of the distinguished personalities who were instrumental in the life of this church. On Thursday 22 September the talk will be by the Right Rev’d and Right Hon the Lord Williams of Oystermouth, former Archbishop of Canterbury on, when his topic will be, ‘The Malines Legacy: a vision for Anglican – Roman catholic dialogue? Admission is free and the lecture will be held in the church.

ALL SAINTS MISSION ACTIVITIES:-
The charities we had agreed to support through the Lent Appeal 2016 (and including applicable Gift Aid) received the following sums:-
Marylebone Project – £2,666.67 – emergency refuge and rehoming project for homeless women.
Us (formerly USPG) – £2,666.67 – work with those experiencing Aids and HIV in Zimbabwe.
London Diocese Lent Appeal – £3,001.66– this year supporting Syrian and Iraqi refugees through charities Open Doors and Aid to the Church in Need. Certificate of appreciation on the Church noticeboard. Thank you to everyone who contributed to this great achievement – a significantly enhanced total collected through the Lent Appeal compared with recent years – of £8,335 (including some late funds generated by the Queen’s 90th Birthday Raffle).
ONGOING SUPPORT for HOMELESS PEOPLE through:
MARYLEBONE PROJECT run by the CHURCH ARMY – A Day Centre, Residential and Transitional accommodation provider, re-settlement project and Educational and Training Unit for women. The Emergency Bed Unit – for which we have for some years helped to provide the funds for one of the 4 beds – offers a safe haven and refuge for women escaping domestic violence, financial crisis, sexual exploitation and mental health issues.
Year Round Support – we also support the Marylebone Resettlement Project with non-perishable food and toiletries or household necessities like cutlery or bed linen/blankets. Thank you to everyone who contributes food and household essentials via the basket in Church or handed in to the Parish Office. Please continue to donate these so we can help more people in need.** NEWS**In addition to items for women accepted by the Marylebone Project, we can now take men’s clothing which is badly needed by the Jesus Centre in Margaret Street, who provide a daily range of services to homeless people.
Day-to-day Support – we respond to the needs of homeless people who visit the church, providing luncheon vouchers for the West London Day Centre for rough sleepers who apply to the office and donating £1,000 towards the Soup Kitchen at the American International Church in Tottenham Court Road this year. We also allow individuals, who need a place to shelter or sleep during the day, to rest in the back of the church. We have created an information resource for Church Watchers, giving useful advice to homeless and vulnerable people seeking particular support or services. In the face of a rising tide of homelessness in London, please help us fund and support people in need through our Mission activities.

Call Streetlink on 0300 500 0914 and they will get a visit from the local Street Team who can put them in contact with the services they may need.
