All Saints Parish Newsletter 30th June 2017

Friday 30 June 2017 at 13:34

Dear Friend,

“Whoever receives you receives me and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”  (Matt. 10.40)

The “Mission Sermon” in Matthew’s Gospel, which we have been hearing at the Eucharist on Sundays, ends with the promise of reward to those who “receive” or “welcome” Christian missionaries.

In the first instance, this meant the twelve apostles – those sent with Jesus’ authority to do as he had been doing in his ministry.  Then, early Christian documents apply it to itinerant preachers.  For St. Ignatius of Antioch it referred to the bishops as successors of the apostles and representatives of Christ.  Later it would be applied to both the papacy (hence the papal title “Vicar of Christ”, now dropped in favour of more modest ones) and to the Church as a whole. The Reformers applied it to the office of preaching, so Calvin wrote:  “Here Christ splendidly extols the dignity of pastors who exercise their ministry sincerely and faithfully.”

The whole discourse suggests that it applies in some sense to all disciples: we are all “vicars of Christ,” representing him to those around us. Every Christian, every “one of these little ones” Jesus speaks of, shares in the Church’s missionary proclamation.

Not many of us will be called to do that as itinerant preachers. Even most of the clergy live a more settled life but priests are often sent to places far from where we were born and brought up; where initially we are not known.  We have to rely on the hospitality, support and welcome of parish communities.

In the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats near the end of Matthew’s Gospel (25.31-end), Jesus speaks of the reward for those whose acts of care and kindness to the poor and needy, “the least of these my brothers and sisters,” have been done unwittingly to him. Here he speaks of conscious acts of welcome and support extended to those who come in his name; those recognized as being “prophets” or “righteous persons.” That recognition will bring the appropriate reward.  In a sense that reward comes in knowing that we are playing our part in Christ’s mission by supporting those who have particular roles in it.

Many of us may feel that we are among the “little ones” when it comes to mission. Unlike the Bishop of the Vicar, we are not numbered among the official representatives of Christ: those who preach or teach, lead worship of celebrate the sacraments. But however insignificant we may think our role is, that does not mean we have none. The question is then: How are we to exercise it?

We need to recognize that if we are known to be Christians where we live and work, then we will be seen as representing Christ. So, we are called to grow in his likeness, lest what people see in us is so marred an image of him that they reject him.

So, we must keep Christ, his life, work and teaching before our eyes, reading and reflecting on the scriptures, welcoming him into our hearts and feeding on him in Holy Communion, allowing him to direct, form and guide all that we do and say, so that people who encounter us, who experience our community, might receive a reward, might find a blessing.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Alan Moses
Vicar, All Saints Margaret Street

ALL SAINTS MISSION PROJECTS
Our year-round fundraising efforts go to support three charities:

The Church Army hostels and programmes in Marylebone empowering homeless women into independent living.
The USPG-led UMOJA, HIV Project in Zimbabwe, enabling people living with HIV and Aids to have positive lives, and
The Soup Kitchen (American International Church, Tottenham Court Road) feeding up to 80 vulnerable people daily in central London.

Men’s clothing especially is needed by the Jesus Centre in Margaret Street and also by the Soup Kitchen at the American International Church, both of whom provide a daily range of services to homeless people. If you have women’s or men’s clothes to give away, please bring to Church and leave at the Parish Office so we can continue to help support our neighbours’ efforts. The Church Army is now also collecting women’s clothes for their Homeless Hostel so all donations can be found a good new home!

The Soup Kitchen specifically calls for: men’s trousers (sizes 32-36) and men’s sturdy/athletic shoes (sizes 9-12 especially) and say ‘we also need men’s outerwear of all varieties and rucksacks and duffle-bags to help our guests carry their belongings!’

The Soup Kitchen team (only part-time cover) asks: ‘Please drop me a line if you are planning to drop things off here. As always, many thanks for your support.’ Soup Kitchen at the American International Church, 79a Tottenham Court Road, London W1T 4TD T: 020 7580 2791    www.amchurch.co.uk/soup-kitchen/
