All Saints Parish Newsletter 5th September 2014

Friday 5 September 2014 at 12:02

Dear Friends,

Sunday’s gospel is about church discipline. It is very unlikely that Jesus said exactly these words, at least in this way. They clearly address a situation from Matthew’s own Christian community a few years later. There was no ‘church’ at the time Jesus was speaking, just a loose group of followers. The only other time the word is used, two chapters earlier in Matthew, is when Peter (or Peter’s faith – you’ll have to listen to Sunday’s sermon if you want my take on that) is named as the foundation of something called ‘the church’.

So this Sunday’s gospel very clearly reflects a situation in the early days of Matthew’s Christian community, and it sounds, as one commentator writes, more like an Archdeacon talking than the Lord (I repeat that in the knowledge that our Archdeacon reads this e-letter and with appropriate apologies to him!). The teaching about how we are to discipline members of the community, heard in isolation, strikes a slightly jarring note. The following passage (which we won’t hear next Sunday because of Holy Cross Day) is about the need for generous forgiveness: this puts Sunday’s teaching about discipline in the context intended by Matthew and understood by him to reflect Jesus’ intention.

Meanwhile, however, we are also given an assurance of the Lord’s attentive presence when ‘two or three’ gather in his name (known to many of us from the so-called ‘prayer of St Chrysostom’ among the prayers at the end of the Book of Common Prayer offices). A young homeless woman who asked me to pray with her last week told me that she knew this as ‘the prayer of agreement’: she was asking me to pray with her because she had been taught that the prayer would have a different character (and be efficacious) if this condition were met. We might be uncomfortable with the slightly mechanistic theology underlying that assumption: if we are not careful it slides into the same territory as indulgences (with which most of us are probably uncomfortable!). But it does also express the truly Catholic (and therefore scriptural) teaching that we cannot be Christians on our own; that the Church is necessary to us and necessarily corporate. It is a check against our individual agendas and delusions: then sins which can just as easily pop up in prayer as anywhere else. That is very much the point of this whole gospel passage. The sometimes tiresome but always necessary business of living our lives in the faith in common with the family in which God has placed us is the vocation of each of us from our baptism. Learning how to be Christians with people we dislike and with whom we disagree is a matter of mature faith, and indeed of our own salvation!

Yours in Christ,

Father Michael Bowie,
Assistant Priest

ALL SAINTS SUPPORT FOR HOMELESS PEOPLE – MARYLEBONE PROJECT –
A Day Centre, Residential and Transitional accommodation provider, re-settlement project and Educational and Training Unit for women. The Emergency Bed Unit – for which we have for some years provided the funds for one of the 4 beds – provides a safe haven and refuge for women escaping domestic violence, financial crisis, sexual exploitation and mental health issues.

Seasonal Appeals
– Last year we donated £2,790 to this Mission Project, collected through the All Saints Festival and Lent Appeals. The PCC approved support of £3,000 for 2014.

Year Round Support – we also support the Resettlement Project with non-perishable food and toiletries or household necessities like cutlery or bed linen/blankets. Please contribute to this effort, bringing donations to the Parish Office or leaving them in Church in the basket in the Baptistery.

Day-to-day Support – we respond to the needs of homeless people who visit the church, providing luncheon vouchers for the West London Day Centre for rough sleepers who apply to the office and allowing a few individuals, who need a place to shelter or sleep during the day, to rest in the back of the church. We have created an information resource for Church Watchers, giving useful advice to homeless and vulnerable people seeking particular support or services.
In the face of a rising tide of homelessness in London, please help us fund and support people in need through our Mission project.
