Dear Friends,
Seventy years ago today allied armies landed in Normandy. The Queen, with other world leaders and survivors of that decisive stage in the struggle against Nazi Germany are in Normandy to mark this anniversary.
The battles in Normandy were not just between armies and nations but between ideas. An ideology based on racial superiority and the ruthless exercise of power and violence would be vanquished. Tragically, we know that the price of victory was to extend the grip of another totalitarianism across Eastern Europe until it too collapsed 25 years ago.
We will soon be commemorating the beginning of the First World War, in which lay the seeds of that second conflict. Those seeds were helped to germinate by economic depression and we have seen during the present economic troubles, the rise of political groups which espouse views similar to those of the Nazis. Jean Marie le Pen’s gaffe about solving France’s immigrant “problem” with the Ebola virus, should not be written off as the ramblings of an old man.
On Sunday we celebrate the feast of Pentecost. Luke tells us that people from Jewish communities around the Roman world, and even beyond the Empire, understood what was being said by the apostles. This was a foretaste of the Church’s universal mission.
On my recent travels, I have attended two services with a multitude of languages.
First, in Rome at the Pope’s Wednesday morning general audience in St. Peter’s Square, pilgrims from almost “every nation under heaven,” from places Luke could not have imagined, were welcomed. Pope Francis’s brief homily was repeated in a series of languages in order that it might be understood by as many as possible of those present. Sitting next to me was a detachment from the Colombian National Police Academy and in front of me some young Muslim Arabs. At the end, we were invited to sing the Lord’s Prayer together in Latin. The congregation of All Saints would have recognised the chant as the one we use at Mass.
Then, in New York, at Fr. Allen Shin’s consecration as bishop, Spanish, French, Korean, Japanese and Tagalog were used in addition to English; reflecting the polyglot nature of that city and its churches.
So both occasions reflected something of Pentecost and of the nature of the Church Catholic as embracing people of all nations and languages.
Yesterday, the clergy of the Two Cities Episcopal Area were guests at the House of Commons for a study day on Faith and Politics. We heard excellent addresses by MPs from the three major parties who spoke movingly of their faith and their political engagement as part of it. In discussion more than one lamented the fact that debate about national and international identities, both within the United Kingdom and in Europe, was being conducted largely in financial terms when much larger issues than balance sheets are at stake. There are complex issues involved in balancing the local and the central, but the tragic events of a few years ago in the Balkans, where the First World War began, should remind us of the terrible cost of not working hard on ways we can live together in peace.

The service will conclude with a short presentation on the significance of Comper’s oeuvre by the Comper scholar Fr Anthony Symondson SJ, who will be introduced by Dr Ayla Lepine (Nottingham University). Following the talks you are warmly invited to a strawberry reception in the church.
Sir Ninian Comper’s celebrated work on St Mark’s in the 1930s, with the rest of the church, was almost completely destroyed during the Battle of Britain The work of restoration was Comper’s last major project, in conjunction with the Vicar, Fr Hugh Stuckey, whose determination saw the work completed.
CAPITAL VISION 2020 VIGIL OF PRAYER – WEDNESDAY 11 JUNE – 8am – Midnight
The Bishop is calling us to a week of prayer, both in the cathedral and in our parishes, in the days between Pentecost and Trinity Sunday. Capital Vision 2020 encourages us to be more Confident, Creative and Compassionate in our sharing of the gospel with the people of our city. All Saints is known as a place and a community of prayer. That prayerfulness needs to be constantly renewed and deepened. Part of our response to the Bishop’s call to prayer will be a Vigil of Prayer in church commencing after the 8am Mass and continuing through the day until midnight. Outside service times, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed on the High Altar and there will be scriptural and prayer resources to help us focus our attention on Jesus. There will be a list in church for people to sign up for particular times, so that the watch can be maintained throughout the day until midnight. Please give a little of your time to join in the watch of prayer.
ST MARY MAGDALENE, PADDINGTON, THURSDAY 12 JUNE, 7.30PM ADMISSION OF CHURCHWARDENS 2014
The Vicar, Prebendary Alan Moses, will be preaching at this service. This parish was founded in 1865, as a “church plant” from All Saints, Margaret Street, in a densely-packed slum district, by Fr Richard Temple West, who was then a Curate at Margaret Street. The architect was George Edmund Street, a member of the Margaret Street congregation, and then at the height of his powers. Another Grade 1 Listed Building, like All Saints, St Mary Mags features a Ninian Comper designed Chapel. All welcome.
CORPUS CHRISTI – All Saints – THURSDAY 19 JUNE, High Mass and Procession of the Blessed Sacrament in the streets around the Church at 6.30pm. The All Saints choir and congregational singing will be supported by brass players accompanying the procession. Preacher: Canon Dr. Angus Ritchie, the Director of the Centre for Contextual Theology based at the Royal Foundation of St. Katharine in the East End. Mass setting: Missa Brevis in B flat—Mozart and anthem O sacrum convivium—Guerrero. Refreshments will be served after the service.
THE ALBAN PILGRIMAGE – SATURDAY 21 JUNE 2014 at St. Alban’s Abbey – the Shrine of Britain’s First Martyr. Please aim to arrive by 10.30am, for procession set off 11am prompt.

ALL SAINTS RESTORATION APPEAL UPDATE
The Programme
The electrical scheme is progressing well. Preparations continue to advance each week, with the Butterfield designed lighting fittings now commissioned and in construction at the blacksmiths.
We hope to have tenders returned for the work by Friday 20 June. After these have been reviewed a recommendation will be made to the PCC for approval. Then the work of stripping out the existing installation can commence. The earliest date for that is in July, subject to sufficient funds being available.
As in previous phases of the restoration programme, weekday worship, except on major feasts, will take place in the Parish Room. This will enable to contractors to have more uninterrupted working time, keeping costs down, speeding the whole process and minimising unavoidable disruption.
The Fundraising Appeal
Fund-raising continues. Applications are in to a small number of charitable trusts we hope may be sympathetic. So far the extended family of All Saints has produced a total of £215, 809 towards our target of £250,000. This is over 86% of the sum required, an excellent result in a little over six months.
Our thanks to all who have so generously contributed to date. With some £34,000 still to find – further donations are of course welcome! Cheques should be made payable to: All Saints Church Restoration Appeal and be sent to the Parish Administrator. Please indicate where Gift Aid may be applied as it increases the value of your contribution by 25%. Thank you!
