 Dear friends,

In the Gospel this Sunday, Jesus is in the Temple at Hannukah, the Feast of Dedication. People crowd around him and demand that he tell them plainly who he is. He does answer them, but not in their terms. He reminds them of his words and works. These both cause faith and demand faith.
“My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me.” Our first duty then is to listen to the voice of Jesus. So in our worship and prayer, and in daily life informed by them, we listen to the word of the Lord.
Worship is a dialogue, prayer a conversation. In them we speak, but if it is to be a real dialogue, a genuine conversation, then there must be listening. In our wiser moments, we know this to be true of our human relationships. It is even more so in our relationships with God. That is why at All Saints we place so much emphasis on silence, both before and during services: those times of reflection after we have heard the word proclaimed in scripture and received the word made flesh in sacrament.
Jesus speaks of knowing his disciples and their following him. It is in conversation that we get to know both another and ourselves. Of course Jesus knows more about us than we know ourselves. Knowing in this sense is not just acquiring information but growing in relationship, in communion. He wants to know us in love, but he does not force himself upon us. We have to follow him, spend time, a lifetime, with him, just as we must in any real human relationship.
And that relationship of listening and following in this life opens into something unimaginably greater than anything we could imagine: “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand.”
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Alan Moses
