Yesterday evening some of us were in a packed St. Paul’s Cathedral for a service which combined the admission to office of hundreds of churchwardens, including John and Chris from All Saints, with the launch of Capital Vision 2020.
It was an experience of the variety and vitality of the diocese.
One of the three themes of Capital Vision is being more compassionate in serving our communities with the love of God.
That compassion already finds expression in a thousand projects run by parishes across the diocese which serve people in a variety of needs. We heard from a youth project in Islington and a theatre group for troubled young people based at St. Saviour’s, Knightsbridge, (just behind Harrods, but serving a very different clientele).
In this Sunday’s Gospel – the raising of the Widow of Nain’s son – we see something more than a demonstration of divine power.
We see Jesus taking the initiative to help someone in need. No one appeals to him for healing for themselves or someone else. Jesus sees the need of a woman who represents the most vulnerable in her society (and ours) and responds to it.
The Christian past and present is filled with examples of such active compassion inspired by that divine compassion which is at the heart of God. It has inspired individual and communal action. It has inspired political campaigns to improve the way our society cares for its most vulnerable people.
The service last night was not just talk and music but prayer. One of the people leading the prayers was Jeremy Tayler, the latest, but I hope not the last, ordinand from All Saints.
At All Saints, on the evening before that great service, we held a quiet vigil of prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Prayer is not an escape from reality, as some think, but a deeper entering into it. The validity of our prayer is demonstrated not by the appearance of piety but by its outflowing in compassion.
