Dear friends,

I am looking forward to our next online Zoom Theology seminar  which takes place tomorrow night. It is particularly encouraging to know that this seminar will be run jointly with our sister parish in New York City, St Mary the Virgin Times Square. Our speaker will be St Mary’s Assistant Priest, Fr Matt Jacob, and we look forward to seeing friends online from New York.

The seminar will take place at 7.00 pm tomorrow (which should be 2 pm in New York) and will focus on the fascinating figure of St Catherine of Siena. Fr Matt has been leading a series of in-person sessions in New York on St Catherine and this online teaching session will give us all the opportunity to benefit from his insights and research.

St Catherine is one of the most remarkable women of the 14th Century. She entered the Third Order of the Dominicans, but was instructed by a vision in 1370 to leave her cloistered life and enter into public life for the sake of the Gospel.

She entered into extensive correspondence with popes and kings, acted as an emissary for the Holy See, and brokered peace treaties between Italian city states. She was hugely concerned  to defend the rights and authority of the popes, and encouraged Gregory XI to return the Papacy to Rome from Avignon. She tirelessly worked to renew and reform the religious life and wrote many works of theology. She died on 29th April 1380.

We will look at Catherine’s writings as well as the historical context of life in fourteenth-century Italy. The primary interest in studying Catherine of Siena will be to see how this mystic and Doctor of the Church can help us to reflect upon and develop a theological understanding of service and active love.

You can find the online Zoom link here.

Join us online tomorrow at 7.00 pm to learn more about this fascinating saint.

Fr Peter

Pentecost – this Sunday

This Sunday is the feast of Pentecost, a day marked by a number of additions to the liturgy. At the High Mass in the morning, the Pentecost Sequence is sung before the Gospel, and in the evening a Te Deum is offered at Benediction in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. The singing of double alleluias at the dismissal returns as Eastertide comes to an end.
