Weekly Email – Trinity 13

Friday 23 August 2024 at 11:45

Dear friends,

I am pleased to announce a number of small additions to our weekly schedule of services this autumn, which I hope will help our parish grow in its life of prayer and worship.

These changes include: the reintroduction from September onwards of an early Low Mass on Sundays at 8.30 am; and making the Wednesday evening Holy Hour which has taken place through August a permanent feature of our weekly schedule.

From Sunday 1st September onwards, there will be a Low Mass at 8.30 am on Sundays in addition to all the usual services which take place already. The early Mass on Sundays disappeared during COVID and ended up never being re-instated. There was uncertainty in those early months after COVID as to whether an early Mass would attract people in a post-Pandemic context, as so few of our parishioners live in the West End.

As our parish has grown in number and confidence over the past two years, however, some have wondered whether re-introducing a short, quiet, early celebration of the Eucharist might be something people find useful. I hope it will be of use to those who prefer to worship early on Sundays, as well as to those who may, from time to time, be busy during the day on Sundays, or who have to work, and would otherwise find it difficult to make their communion.

This 8.30 am Low Mass will last no more than half an hour each Sunday and will run every week from 1st September until the end of the year. We will then review the situation in January to see whether the attendance it has prompted warrants making it a permanent part of our schedule of services.

The period of exposition of the Blessed Sacrament which has taken place on Wednesday evenings in August has proven to be very popular. It provides a wonderful opportunity for people to pray in quiet stillness in the sacramental presence of the Lord.

In response to requests that this continue, from Wednesday 4th September onwards, there will be a Holy Hour each Wednesday evening from 5.30 pm until the evening Mass at 6.30 pm.

You are welcome to attend for the whole Holy Hour, or just for a portion of it. Again, like the Sunday 8.30 am Low Mass, we will review attendance at the end of the year to see whether this has been an addition to our weekly pattern that merits being made part of our permanent schedule of liturgies.

I hope both these changes make it more easy and convenient for people to make the Eucharistic presence and power of the Lord the centre of their lives. I pray they will enable us to draw closer to the Lord who gives himself to us in the sacrament of the altar. This small expansion of liturgical provision should be seen as a positive sign that God is blessing us with growth and increased confidence in the mission and ministry he has entrusted to our parish.

What a wonderful time our parish hiking group had last Saturday exploring West Sussex and Lancing College. We are grateful for the tour our group of ramblers were given of the school’s splendid chapel!

August Bible Study

There has been an evening of Bible study each Wednesday night throughout the month of August. The last session will take place next week on Wednesday 28th August.

The evening starts with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 6pm, followed by Mass at 6.30. A soup supper takes place at 7pm and study will run 7.30-8.30.

Join us in our parish bar each Sunday – open each week after the High Mass and Evensong.
