Dear friends,

The feast of the Assumption will soon be upon us in a month or so’s time. Our parish keeps this significant feast with a number of beautiful liturgical celebrations. I ask you all to make sure you have these in your diary, and help advertise them as widely as you can.

The Sunday morning High Mass on 11th August will be a straightforward “green” High Mass of Trinity 11. In the evening of that day, however, we will have our first Assumptiontide celebration with a procession of Our Lady at 6.00 pm. This will take the form of Solemn Evensong, Procession down Oxford Street, and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. The evening will finish, as usual, with a splendid parish party in our courtyard.

The preacher on Sunday 11th August in the evening will be Fr Andrew Walker, the Vicar of St Mary’s, Bourne Street. The music will include the Evening Service in E Flat Major, No. 2 by Charles Wood and Ave Maris Stella by Edvard Grieg.

On the evening of Thursday 15th August, there will be a High Mass at 6.30 pm to celebrate the feast day itself. Fr Alan will preach and the music will include the Missa Brevis Sancti Joannis de Deo by Joseph Haydn and Assumpta est Maria by Palestrina.

We will be advertising these celebrations over the coming days and weeks and I  ask for your help with this important task. Do let as many people know about these liturgies as possible. Posters and flyers will be available soon for you to take to anyone who might be interested.

In particular, please help us spread awareness through social media. On Facebook, it would be helpful if you could like and share the advert about our Assumptiontide procession which appeared earlier this week and can be found here. On Twitter, please retweet this tweet if you are able. We also have a splendid video of the procession circulating which can be seen here on Facebook and here on Twitter – do, please, share and like.

I look forward to celebrating with you all the triumph of God’s grace in the life of Our Lady as she is taken body and soul into heaven at the end of her earthly life, there to intercede for us powerfully as Queen of Heaven.

Fr Peter

American Friends of All Saints’

The launch of the American Friends of All Saints’, Margaret Street, will take place at a reception at 6.00 pm on Friday 20th September at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Times Square, New York.

We are hugely grateful for the generosity of Fr Sammy Wood and the people of St Mary the Virgin for allowing us to use St Joseph’s Hall for this event.

If you live near the New York area and would like to attend, please sign up (tickets are free) on eventbrite here.

Visit to the Fitzrovia Chapel

Just three tickets remain for our evening visit to the Fitzrovia Chapel on Tuesday 10th September.

You can read more about the history of this extraordinary architectural jewel, which is just around the corner from All Saints’, in last week’s parish email here.

The outing will begin at 7.00 pm at All Saints’ with an aperitif and a short introductory lecture given by Fr Peter. We will make our way to the Chapel by 7.45 for a tour given by Dr James Thompson, and then finish the evening with dinner at Sergio’s Italian restaurant on Great Titchfield Street (main course and pudding, plus wine). The cost of the evening – including dinner – is £35. You can sign up for this event through the following Eventbrite link here.

It was a great joy to welcome to All Saints’ last Sunday a group of impressive young people from Trinity Church, Wall Street, New York, who are in London as part of a formational programme focussed on Reconciliation. It was fascinating to hear all about what they’ve been doing in London and to be able to give them a tour of our church building. We wish them all well and will keep them in our prayers!

Parish Mission: St Timothy’s, Winston-Salem

In the week before the New York launch of the American Friends, Fr Peter will also be visiting St Timothy’s, Winston-Salem, North Carolina, (the home of Fr Steve Rice) to preach and offer some parish teaching as part of a weekend mission. He will offer two teaching evenings on Sunday 15th September and on Monday 16th September.

You are most welcome to join the St Timothy’s mission weekend if you live near Winston-Salem and can signal your intention here on eventbrite.

There will also be opportunities during Fr Peter’s time in Winston-Salem for people to learn more about the life of All Saints’, Margaret Street, and our new American Friends scheme. Do be in touch if you live near Winston-Salem and would like to know more.

August Bible Study

A weekly Bible Study, led by Fr Alan, will be on offer throughout August. Our plan is to work through the Gospel of St Mark.

Every Wednesday in August there will be exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from 6.00 pm, Mass at 6.30 pm, followed by a period of Bible Study with a simple supper provided. The evening will end no later than 8.30 pm. Please let Fr Alan know if you want to attend.

It was good to welcome friends, visitors and regulars last Sunday after the High Mass with coffee in our courtyard.

Walking Trip to Lancing College

Fr Alan will be leading a walking trip to Sussex on Saturday, August 17th. We’ll get the train to Shoreham (likely the 10.16 from Victoria), and take in that town’s very fine churches, before making our way to Lancing College, where we’ve kindly been offered a tour of the chapel.

We’ll then move on towards Steyning, dropping by to see the wall-paintings at Coombes and the church at Botolphs. We’ll get the bus back into Shoreham, with the opportunity for an early supper at a local hostelry. Bring a packed lunch for the route!  Everyone is welcome, just let Fr Alan know if you’re interested.

You can watch last Sunday’s Solemn Mass here. Fr Peter was the preacher: “When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed; and yet he liked to listen to him.” Herod is curious about John but fails to be changed by his message. The story of John reveals what it looks like when our relationship with the Gospel gets no further than the level of curiosity. Sunday’s sermon explored how we can be changed by Christ so as to make better choices than Herod Antipas did when we are subjected to emotional pressure.

Music this Sunday

Our music this Sunday is kindly sponsored by Rebecca Hirst in memory of her mother, Val Hirst.

Flowers

The flowers are given by Sandra Wheen in memory of her brother James Wheen, whose ten year anniversary falls at this time.
