Dear friends,
I am pleased to announce – especially in the light of Fr Alan’s letter last week announcing a “reboot” of our cell of Our Lady of Walsingham – that we will be participating in the silent Advent retreat at the Shrine in December.
The Advent retreat takes place from Friday 5th December to Sunday 7th December. We have taken groups int he past and many have spoken of how moving they find the experience, especially in the weeks before Christmas when the world can be at its most demanding and noisy.
All those who gather for the retreat go into silence on Friday evening after supper. Silence is then kept in the Shrine grounds through the whole of Saturday until after the Solemn Mass on Sunday morning which take place at St Mary’s parish church.
Through this whole time, full board accommodation is provided and meals are taken together silently in the pilgrim refectory.
The retreat conductor this year will be Fr Christopher Irvine. He has served in many roles in the church but was until recently the Principal of the College of the Resurrection, Mirfield, and then latterly, before retirement, he was Canon Librarian of Canterbury. He is a well-known and highly respected speaker an preacher.
The retreat this year will consist of four addresses spread over the time retreatants spend together. These will focus on three works of art featuring John the Baptist. It will be entitled, ‘Pointing the Way: John the Baptist and the priestly task.’
There will also be opportunities for retreatants to speak in confidence about any aspect of their spiritual life and priests will be available to hear confessions. On the Saturday evening the Shrine offers a special liturgy offering the healing ministries of the church.
The cost of the retreat is £260. This covers the cost of a room with full board for two nights and a transfer from Kings Lynn to Walsingham. We will follow our usual routine of asking retreatants to but their own train tickets. We will set off around midday on Friday 5th December and travel by train to Kings Lynn, returning to Kings Cross on Sunday evening around 7.00 pm.
Please be in touch with me directly if you would like to come on this retreat but might be prevented from doing to by financial hardship. You can sign up via the eventbrite link here. Nearer the time, our parish office will then be in touch with you asking you to settle the balance of what you owe.
I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful retreat to anyone who wishes to make taking a retreat part of their spiritual journey through each year. It is also a very special experience to be in Walsingham for a routine of events slightly different from our usual weekend pilgrimage and in a slightly different gear. I pray God will use the silence, the addresses and the holiness of place to speak to us of his love, and to renew us in our discipleship.

August Bible Study
Our August Bible study will focus on St Luke’s Gospel this year. Sessions will take place on 13, 20 and 27 August after the evening Mass. You can sign up for all the sessions, or just those you are able to make, here.
We were overjoyed on Sunday to bless a new set of green Low Mass vestments at the end of the High Mass. They have been very kindly donated by Stephen Miller to celebrate his fortieth anniversary as a server of All Saints’. It was wonderful to see him MC the Mass at which the vestments were blessed. Thank you Stephen for all you contribute to our parish!
