Dear friends,

May I draw your attention to the forthcoming parish trip to see the Zurbaran exhibition at the National Gallery in a week’s time next Friday 31st July at 6.00 pm? We still have 10 tickets left for the evening.

This is the first time an exhibition specially dedicated to Zurbaran has taken place in the UK. It draws us in a fascinating way into the theological confidence, complexity and beauty of the Spanish Counter-Reformation – and particularly its depiction of the saints. Our communion with God’s saints is revealed in a startling and vivid way as we encounter these individuals presented as striking heroes and selfless ascetics.

The viewer is invited to ponder the mysteries of our salvation and experience the saints’ spiritual struggles in an intense moment of vision-as-communion. The whole exhibition is, if you like, a sensitive exploration of the theological power of seeing as a spiritual experience and as an empathetic prompt that draws us into the realm of the divine. I urge you to join us if you are free next Friday.

Tickets are £20 each. You can also opt to come for supper after the exhibition if you like at 8.00 pm at the Pizza Express on the Strand, at £40 per head (two courses of a pizza plus a pudding, including drinks). Please book either or both of these options here via Eventbrite.

Building work in church

Many thanks for the patience and forbearance people are showing whilst the installation of our new speaker system takes place in church.

For the next week or two the daily Mass will take place in the Oratory (i.e. in number 7 Margaret Street), whilst the work continues in the church. The 12 noon Mass will be live-streamed from the Oratory.

During this period the church building will remain closed from Monday to Saturday. On Sunday mornings you will notice that the engineers’ equipment will still be in church, but will be safely stowed to the sides of the aisles and should not affect the liturgy too much.

We are very grateful to Huw Pryce and John Forde for the significant work they have both put into bringing this exciting project to pass over several months. It will result in a much better audio system for our church, improved potential for live-streaming, and a significantly improved aural experience for those in the building during services.

Feast of the Assumption 2026

Please note that the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary will be kept this year on Sunday 16th August 2026. There will be a High Mass at 11.00 am in the morning, which will be of the Assumption, at which the preacher will be the Vicar. In the evening at 6.00 pm we will have our usual celebration of Evensong with Procession of Our Lady and Benediction at which the preacher will be Fr Alan Rimmer.

Box Hill Parish Walk Tomorrow, Saturday 25th July

We are looking forward to seeing our walkers tomorrow. We need to get the 10.23am Dorking train from Waterloo to Box Hill and Westhumble, or meet at the latter station by 11.15am.

The circular walk is around 8 miles, takes in St Barnabas Church, Ranmore; the stepping stones, and Box Hill, and naturally involves some climbs. Bring some lunch, some water and some sunscreen. There will be the opportunity for a pint at the end of the walk.
