Fr Alan writes:

Dear all,

In the readings at Mass last Sunday we were reminded of the imperative that our faith must communicate fully with the way we live the rest of our lives. Our commitment to “worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness” cannot be separated from his commandment to serve him in the streets: as we heard from the Letter of St James “religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress”.

At our PCC away day last year, and the five year Mission Action Plan that emerged from it, one of the areas identified in our parish’s life as needing work, was our corporate commitment to the needs of those who are less fortunate than many of us.

It is good therefore to bring to you today news of a first step in that direction; namely two nights over the coming winter when we at All Saints’ will take the lead in feeding and offering hospitality to some of the homeless of this city at the night shelter at the American Church on the Tottenham Court Road. This will happen under the aegis of C4WS, a Camden-based charity which for nearly 20 years has sought to support those without homes in rebuilding their lives.

We are very grateful to Jennifer Mills-Knutsen and our sisters and brothers in Christ at the American International Church on Tottenham Court Road for introducing us to this scheme, and with whom we hope to work more extensively in coming years as we seek to engage more intentionally with the needs of the communities around us.

The dates in question are Wednesday 6th-Thursday 7th of November 2024, and Wednesday 5th-Thursday 6th February, 2025. Both nights begin at 6pm and will take place at the American Church, and we have been asked to supply 7 volunteers for each night: a kitchen lead; a team lead; an overnight volunteer and 2 further evening volunteers, as well as a Breakfast lead and further volunteer for the following morning shift, from 7am. All volunteers must be over 18.

If you are interested in joining our team on one of these nights, please be in touch with the Parish Office (office@asms.uk). All volunteers will need to watch this training video and sign the agreement with C4WS linked here.

If you are unable to make those nights, but could help on others, please consider signing up here for individual shifts.

May God bless us as we seek as a Christian family to grow in knowledge of his love, and thus in love of his people.

with my love,

Fr Alan

It was such a joy to welcome Matilda Johnston last Sunday as our new organ scholar. We assure her of our support, best wishes, and prayers as she takes up this role. Welcome, Tilly!

Confessions: Fr Paschal Worton

Fr Paschal Worton will be available to hear confessions at All Saints’ on Wednesday 11th September from 5.30 pm.

The parish clergy are also available to hear confessions before or after any Low Mass, and at 6.00 pm on Saturday evenings.

Parishioners enjoy coffee in the courtyard last Sunday after the High Mass.

Feast of Our Lady of Walsingham:
24th September

All are welcome to join us for a said Mass with hymns at 6.30pm on Tuesday 24th September 2024. There will be a brief meeting of the Parish Cell of Our Lady of Walsingham, followed by refreshments. The Cell is essentially a group of prayer and fellowship, centring its members on the example of Mary through her manifestation at Walsingham – ‘England’s Nazareth’. Should you like more information, or to be admitted to the Cell, please contact Fr Alan, or Sheelagh Gudgeon.

Our Zoom Theology Seminar programme for the next 12 months is out now. We will be covering a fascinating range of topics over the next year: the history of the German Church; the lives and witness of Medieval women; the thought of Soren Kirkegaard; the Council of Nicaea; Anglo-Catholic greats such as Dom Bernard Clement and Thomas McKee Brown; and the contribution of enslaved biblical writers and scribes. You can read more about the programme with further details and the Zoom link here.

Changes to weekly service schedule

From this month onwards, there will be a new 8.30 am early Low Mass on Sundays. We hope this will be of use to those who prefer to worship earlier in the day, or who might find it difficult to get to the 11.00 am High Mass.

In addition, there will now be a Holy Hour involving exposition of the Blessed Sacrament at 5.30 pm on Wednesdays before the evening Mass.

Have a look at recently-announced opportunities for in person formation at All Saints’ this autumn. A range of interesting speakers will be guiding us through four texts of theological significance in a series of study evenings: Dr Charlotte Gauthier on the Medieval poem “Pearl”; Fr AKMA Adam on the Epistle of James; Fr Jeremy Haselock on Prayer Book revision; and Fr Alan Rimmer on a novel by Graham Greene. More details, including links to register for each session can be found here.

Join the American Friends of All Saints’, Margaret Street

If you live in the United States, and would like to donate to All Saints’ in U.S. dollars, you can now do this by joining the American Friends of All Saints’, Margaret Street.  Any contribution donated to the American Friends can be claimed back as a charitable tax deduction in the United States. Further details of this new scheme can be found here.

Please note that there will be a New York launch of the American Friends on Friday 20th September 2024 at 6 pm at St Mary the Virgin, West 46th Street, NYC. You can book a (free) ticket for the event on eventbrite here.
