Dear friends,
You will, no doubt, by now have heard the news that the Bishop of London has been nominated as the new Archbishop of Canterbury. We offer Bishop Sarah our parish’s heartiest congratulations and assure her of our prayers and support and she prepares to take up this significant and demanding new role.
I am grateful to her for the assiduous hard work, care and sensitivity she has put into being Bishop of London, and particularly in her role as the Area Bishop for the Two Cities Area of our diocese.
On the wider stage, Bishop Sarah has contributed to the life of the National Church through the work of the General Synod on matters such as Living in Love and Faith. She has also accomplished much through her chairing of the Triennium Funding Working Group in terms of returning funding from faddy centralised projects to supporting parochial ministry.
She has also been a tireless opponent of the assisted suicide legislation and has offered in the House of Lords a convincing, reasoned, compassionate, and well-informed alternative view to the one being proposed by those seeking to change the present status quo.
For all these contributions, we give thanks and wish Bishop Sarah well in this new phase of her public ministry.
I gather Bishop Sarah will relinquish her duties as Bishop of London at the end of January. This means she will continue to exercise her ministry as Bishop of London until then.
It has been announced that the acting Bishop of London and Acting Bishop of the Two Cities Area during the episcopal interregnum will be the Bishop of Kensington, Bishop Emma Ineson.
The Church of England is struggling particularly acutely at the moment with the slow-moving processes by which it appoints diocesan bishops. This means that there is now a long queue of seven sees waiting to be filled at the moment, a queue we now find ourselves at the back of. I suspect the episcopal interregnum will not be short at all. It may be 18 months or more before we see a new Bishop of London.
All this means that for the time being nothing changes or requires any kind of review in terms of the episcopal ministry we receive at All Saints’ from the Bishop of Fulham until we know who the new Bishop of London is.
I have written to Bishop Sarah thanking her on behalf of our parish for all she has done for our Diocese, and have let her know we will be praying for her as she moves to the See of Canterbury.

Berlin Partnership
Fr Peter has recently been appointed the coordinator of our diocesan ecumenical partnership with the Evangelical Church in Berlin-Brandenburg. It was a great honour for Fr Peter to spend last weekend in Berlin with Fr Luke Miller, the Archdeacon of London, representing the Diocese of London at the inauguration of Dr Julia Helmke as the new “Generalsuperindentin” of the Berlin Central Area. This role is akin to what we would call an Area Bishop.
Our diocesan partnership with Berlin aims to have a theological conference once every two years. The next conference will take place next year from 9th-12th October 2026 in Berlin. If anyone is interested in attending this conference and learning more about the life of the Church in Berlin and our partnership with it, please be in touch with Fr Peter.
Fr Peter was pleased to spend last Sunday morning with the community at the Jesus-Christus-Kirche in Dahlem, Berlin. He was invited to address the congregation about the ecumenical link the Diocese of London has with the Church in Berlin-Brandenburg.
Winter homeless shelter
We are looking for volunteers for our parish winter homeless shelter project.
The pattern involves taking the lead in feeding and offering hospitality to some of the homeless of this city at the night shelter hosted at the American Church on the Tottenham Court Road.
We have undertaken to run the shelter on the following nights: Wednesday 26th November 2025; Wednesday 7th January 2026; Wednesday 4th February 2026; and Wednesday 18th March 2026.
If you would like to volunteer, please be in touch with Fr Alan (assistant.priest@asms.uk) and put these dates in your diary.
Fr Julian was our preacher last Sunday. You can watch the High Mass again here.
