Dear friends,
It won’t be long before the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady is upon us. We will be celebrating this with a High Mass on the day itself – Friday 15th August – at 6.30 pm. However, as is our usual custom, we will also be keeping a second commemoration of the feast on the nearest Sunday evening with Evensong, Procession of Our Lady down Oxford Street and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament at 6.00 pm on Sunday 17th August. The preacher at Evensong will be Fr Philip Corbett, the parish priest of St Silas’, Kentish Town.
As we prepare for these celebrations, can I ask a few favours of you all? First, please put these dates in your diary and make an effort to be present, especially for the procession of Our Lady on the Sunday evening.
Second, we need a good number of stewards for the procession on Sunday 17th August. Our stewards wear a hi-his vest and make sure the procession takes place in a safe and well organised way. They are a crucial part of the evening. If you are able to volunteer in this way, please contact Fr Alan or the parish office (office@asms.uk).
Third, please help us as we begin to advertise these celebrations on social media in the run-up to the feast. Posts and adverts will start appearing on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Please like and share these as much as you can in order to raise awareness of our Assumptiontide celebrations.
I look forward to the Assumptiontide each year. It is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the triumph of God’s grace in the life of Our Lady, and to proclaim our faith in Jesus Christ publicly through a joyful procession through the West End. It will be great to welcome visiting friends and newcomers for the feast. Let’s all work together to make this year’s celebrations as terrific as they have been in years past.
Fr Peter
This Sunday’s music
The music at Evensong on Sunday is sponsored by Simon Rainey KC and Frau Dr Christiane Loidl-Rainey to mark the anniversary of their first meeting. Many thanks indeed to Simon and Christiane for their generosity. We send them our best wishes and congratulations on this anniversary.
Film night
There will be a film night with refreshments for our young adults at Fr Alan’s flat on 23 July at 7 pm. Please be in touch with Fr Alan if you wish to attend.
It was a great pleasure and a joy to welcome Fr Matthew Olver as our preacher last Sunday. You can watch the High Mass and listen to his homily again here.
August Bible Study
Encouraged by the size and consistency of numbers at the Bible studies that took place after Holy Hour and the evening Mass on Wednesdays in August last year, there will be another series of Bible studies this year, centred on St Luke’s Gospel. Sessions will take place on 13, 20 and 27 August. There will be a rough limit of 25 per session and sign-up (free, of course) will be by Eventbrite, so that we fit comfortably into the Parish Room. There will be tea and coffee available. You can sign up for all the sessions, or just those you are able to make, here.
Our latest Zoom Theology Seminar took place on Tuesday, discussing Candida Moss’s latest book entitled, “God’s Ghostwriters.” It explored the way in which enslaved and low status workers were used in the writing and dissemination of the New Testament. We were joined by people from as far away as France, Norway and even Hawaii!
