Weekly email – Trinity Sunday
Documents
Dear friends,
We celebrate two of the most significant feasts in the Church’s year over the next week: Trinity Sunday this weekend; followed by Corpus Christi on Thursday. It is no mistake or coincidence that they follow on so closely from each other.
On Trinity Sunday we celebrate the fact that God has revealed himself to us as a divine community of persons, one in substance, splendour, and purpose. Yet, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit whom we worship are not three gods, but one divine unity. The Spirit is the bond of love who unites the Son to the Father in a constant act of perfect self-offering.
The feast of the Trinity is not just a statement of credal faith, however. It is also a celebration of the ways in which we ourselves participate in God’s divine life. We are made one with Christ as a part of his Body in Baptism. Through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit, we are drawn into the Son’s perfect worship of the Father, and participate in him as we make our way through this world to enteral life.
One of the most important places in which we see this Trinitarian dynamic is in our celebration of the Eucharist. This is why the feast of Corpus Christi follows on so closely after Trinity Sunday.
What we proclaim on Trinity Sunday, is displayed, revealed and lived out on Corpus Christi. Christ makes himself present through the power of his Holy Spirit, as bread and wine become his Body and Blood.
As we are drawn into Christ’s presence we realise we encounter the one who eternally offers himself to the Father in love, a mystery we ourselves are drawn into. Christ’s sacrifice becomes ours as we offer in an unbloody way the sacrifice of Calvary, our offering of thanks and praise.
As Corpus Christi approaches, please make a special effort to ensure you are able to attend our High Mass and Procession on Thursday 4th June at 6.30 pm. Our preacher this year will be Fr David Houlding, a much-loved friend of our parish. The music will be splendid and will include: Missa Aeterna Christi Munera by Palestrina; Mozart’s Ave Verum Corpus; and the magnificent Tantum Ergo by Henschel.
Let us proclaim to the world through these feasts in a joyful and convincing way the fact that God abides amongst us and that he journeys with his pilgrim people as they make their way to the City of God.
